Meet Our Artist, Elise Maree

Artist Series Collaborations Little Branch x Elise Maree new product

What is the inspiration behind the collection?

My inspiration for the 'Let Them Eat Cake' collection was that I so greatly desired to create a line that was all about fun and playfulness. I wanted to create pieces that were lighthearted and that would make people happy and inspire people to write to one another and to celebrate the wonderful people who fill their life.

What was your favourite part of creating this collection for Little Branch?

I think my favourite part in creating this collection was just seeing each little piece come to life on paper. It was so lovely to be able to have an avenue for my imagination to actually be seen and poured into.

How do you hope people feel when they see the new collection?

I want people to be so filled with joy when they see this collection. I want people to smile, giggle and for their hearts to feel brightened. I want people to feel like gold.

What inspired you to collaborate with Little Branch?

Little Branch has always been a company I have been inspired by and aspired to be like.

I remember seeing lots of Maree's work in all the wonderful boutiques and paper shops around Sydney and I just remember thinking to myself- "Ahh! This is what I dream of doing, I need to do this!"  and years later, due to a big life change, where I could no longer work I decided I needed to paint full time and so I decided to reach out to Maree to see if she wanted to collaborate with me and this is where the story of "Let Them Eat Cake" began...

Tell us a little bit about your journey as an artist.

For as long as I can remember I've always wanted to be an artist. To be honest I think I was just born to be one. I was always creating, whether it was drawing, painting, dressing up or creating sculptures with my handbags in trees! I couldn't help myself. I had to express myself and I had to make beautiful things. I went through high school with art as my favourite subject and often would spend my lunch break in the art room working away. Once I finished school I then did 3 years of Visual Arts at School of Creative Arts in Sydney. Throughout my college years, I was able to exhibit on many different occasions and nothing made my heart happier. I then moved to Canada, which I currently call home and here I've been able to sell at local markets and hang my work in some cafe spaces and galleries.

What are some of the techniques/materials you used to create the artworks in the 'Let Them Eat Cake' collection?

Watercolour is my favourite medium to work in, along with college and ink. I usually always begin with sketching out my pieces then painting them and then finishing them off with ink work. Some of these pieces also have small elements of college in them, which I honestly have just been collecting bits and bobs over the years. I have bags of papers, cutouts, book pages, confetti and envelopes. I will go hunting through them often when looking for the finishing touches to a piece.
